해마다 태국의 북동부에 위치한 러이(Loei) 지방의 단 사이(Dan Sai) 거리에서 치러지는 거대한 분루앙 페스티벌(Bun Lunang Festival)의 한 부분을 차지하는 피타콘 페스티벌이 오는 7월 4일부터 5일까지 펼쳐진다.
참가자들은 코를 강조한 화려하고 못생긴 귀신 가면을 쓰고 두 팔을 밖으로 내놓을 수 있는 죄수복을 입는 게 이 페스티벌의 특징이다.
참가자들은 자신만의 독특한 무기와 사각형의 벨을 닮은 마까라엥(Makkakaeng)을 허리에 차고 행진 그룹에 따라 말, 물소, 코끼리 등의 형상을 지니기도 한다.
페스티벌 기간은 이틀로 첫날은 프라우빠쿳(Phra Uppakhut-부처상)을 람남만(lam Nam Man)으로 옮기는 행진이 벌어지고 둘째 날은 시내까지 행진이 이어진다. 밤이 되면 승려들이 부처의 환생을 기원하는 기도를 올린다. 피따콘 페스티벌에서는 또한 로켓 행진이나 피따콘 춤 경연대회, 농산물 경연대회와 문화 행사도 곁들여진다.
