태국의 러이 끄라통 축제, 수코타이로 놀러 오세요!

‘빛의 축제’로 유명한 태국의 전통 축제 러이 끄라통이 11월 22일을 전후로 태국 전역에서 다채롭게 펼쳐질 예정이다. 
 
태국력 12월 보름에 열리는 러이 끄라통 축제는 사람들이 바나나 잎으로 만든 조그마한 연꽃 모양의 작은 배에 불을 밝힌 초와 꽃, 동전 등을 실어서 강물이나 운하 또는 호수로 띄워 보내면서 소원을 비는데, 이 때 끄라통의 촛불이 꺼지지 않고 멀리 떠내려가면 자신의 소원이 이루어 진다고 믿는다. 이는 고대 물의 신에게 경의를 표하던 전통에서 기원하고 있다. 

‘러이’는 띄우다 는 뜻이며 ‘끄라통’은 다양한 의미가 있지만 그 중에서도 ‘러이 끄라통에 물에 띄우는 바구니’란 뜻이 그 중 하나이다. 전통적으로 끄라통은 바나나 줄기로 만들며 오늘날에는 빵이나 스티로폼으로 만들기도 한다. 빵으로 만든 끄라통은 시간이 지나면 자연스럽게 분해되고 또한 물고기 밥이 된다. 끄라통의 모양은 활짝 핀 꽃, 백조, 석상, 불교 관련물 등 그 모양이 다양하지만 연꽃 모양이 가장 보편적이다. 이 축제 동안 작은 배들이 빛을 밝히며 강을 떠내려 가는 모습이 태국 전역을 수 놓으며 아름다운 광경을 만들어 낸다. 또한 장식 배 행렬과 조명으로 장식한 건물들, 방콕 짜오 프라야 강변의 역사 유적지에서 열리는 이벤트와 같은 다양한 러이 끄라통 행사들을 관람할 수 있다. 

이 축제는 초기 라따나꼬신 시대의 왕실 전통의식에서부터 비롯되어 그 후 일반인들에게까지 퍼져 오늘에 이른 것으로 알려져 있으며 가장 전통적인 축제의 모습을 보려면 수코타이를 방문하면 된다. 수코타이에서는 끄라통 띄우기와 더불어 아름답고 화려한 불꽃놀이가 수코타이 역사 공원의 밤하늘을 수 놓는다. 특히 올 해는 11월 16일부터 25일까지 빛과 소리의 축제(Light & Sound Presentation)가 함께 펼쳐질 예정으로 여느 지역의 러이 끄라통 보다도 풍성한 볼 거리를 제공한다.
